Just-In-Time is the practice to delay the manufacturing, sourcing and/or delivery to the last possible moment, to reduce inventory and process cycles. Toyota defines JIT as making "only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the amount needed."

The following operational elements are typically required to implement Just-In-Time:

• Make-to-Order and lot size reduction
• Kanban

Additionally Just-In-Time requires the following management elements:

• Total Quality Management (TQM)

The Just-In-Time practice originated in the automotive industry (Japan) and is also known as the Toyota Production System (TPS).
