Overall Equipment Efficiency

Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) measures the ability to efficiently utilize production equipment (or assets). It measures how much of the time your manufacturing asset is running at full capacity and producing good products.

Calculation

where:
  • Equipment Availability = The percentage of time the equipment is ready and able to run, excluding planned and unplanned downtime.
  • Equipment Performance = The percentage of time the equipment is running at its maximum speed, without minor stops or slow cycles.
  • Produced Quality = The percentage of good parts produced, excluding defects or rework.
Unit of Measure: %

Importance

An Overall Equipment Efficiency approaching 100% means that:

  • The equipment is always available and running (~100% Equipment Availability)
  • The equipment is running at maximum speed with no minor stops or slow cycles (~100% Equipment Performance)
  • Parts are produced with no defects or rework (~100% Produced Quality)

Notes

In most industries:

  • 85% or more is considered world class
  • 60% is typical performance
  • 40% is considered lagging, bu tnot uncommon for manufacturers new to OEE.
