Adaptability is the ability of an organization or function to adapt itself, timely and efficiently, to changing internal and external circumstances. Adaptability has four sub-attributes:
- Agility = The ability to respond to unforeseen and unexpected circumstances. Consider the event where an earthquake occurs in an area where earthquakes are unlikely.
- Flexibility = The ability to respond to unforeseen yet expected circumstances. An example of supply chain flexibility is the ability to fulfill customer orders for an item that was under-forecasted by utilizing unused materials from an item that was over-forecasted.
- Resilience = The ability to recover/adjust after the occurrence of an event. A short Time-to-Recover is an example of a resilience metric.
- Robustness = The ability to survive without major adjustments during and after the occurrence of an event.
Not every sub-attribute of Adaptability may have metrics or key indicators identified as Adaptability is generally difficult to quantify.
